The ENEP Bulletin Issue 24 – August 2012
ENEP BULLETIN
European Network of Environmental Professionals
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Colleagues,
A Bulletin full of information regarding
the development of our Network is here
for you. Many topics are addressed that
were discussed at the last General
Assembly, held in Basel where our Swiss
member ASEP/SVU has been such an
excellent host. And of course we look
ahead to our next Assembly which will be
held this at our Headquarters in Brussels
this Autumn; a summary of the ENEP
action programme (often called our
‘Business Plan’), information on our
communication strategy, and financial
information are among the items
addressed. You will also find news from
the ‘Accreditation Task Force’, which
provides you with an update on where we
stand in our thinking regarding the
establishment of a European
environment professional charter.
Directly following from a decision at the
latest General Assembly, information is
included on a ‘membership expertise
matrix’ which will make it easier to find
out which types of specialist expertise and
interest areas are to be found among
which associations.
Having fled the rainy and windy parts of
Europe, from my temporary Italian refuge
I cordially wish you a Summer holiday as
happy as the one I am currently
celebrating. Looking forward to meeting
again après la rentrée.
Jan Karel Mak, President
BRUSSELS GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Professional Accreditation

· Alternative Financial Instruments
· Budget Approval
We are also in the process of organising
the side events for the Thursday,
information for which will be circulated
with the agenda and papers for the
General Assembly.
CONFERENCE ON BIODIVERSITY STRATEGIES ACROSS EUROPE
A Conference on Biodiversity Strategies in
Europe was organised by ENEP´s
Biodiversity Working Group as a side
event for this year’s Spring General
1
The ENEP Bulletin Issue 24 – August 2012
Assembly, hosted by our Swiss partners,
the Association of Swiss Environmental
Professionals (ASEP), in partnership with
the Association Française des Ingénieurs
Ecologues (AFIE). The Conference
included examples of National
Biodiversity Strategies from Switzerland
and France, as well as the European
Biodiversity Strategy. We celebrated the
launch of the Swiss Biodiversity Strategy,
and also learned about the new ones
adopted in France and Europe for the
horizon 2020. Some 20 ENEP members
benefited from this event as well as ENEP
´s Association members in a convivial
atmosphere. Many thanks to those who
participated in this biodiversity event!
The European Biodiversity Strategy 2020
was launched in 2011 with the aim of
stopping biodiversity loss and ecosystem
services degradation. This new document
is based on a new multisectorial approach
with 6 objectives that imply the
involvement of key sectorial policies.
The 6 objectives of the European
Biodiversity Strategy are:
· Fully implement the Birds and
Habitats Directives
· Maintain and restore ecosystems
and their services
· Increase the contribution of
agriculture and forestry to
biodiversity
· Ensure the sustainable use of
fisheries resources
· Combat Invasive Alien Species
· Step-up action to tackle the global
biodiversity crisis

Project GRU: BEST PRACTICES in WASTE management
The ENEP member AIAT was awarded, as
project leader, funds after a national
competition promoted by the Italian
Ministry of Environment and related to
the presentation of environmental
education and sustainability proposals.
The winning project is titled “GRU- An
integrated policy for the management and
the reduction of waste in University
environment” and will be developed in a
12 month time-frame. The kick off of the
project occurred on the 1st of March.
GRU project deals with environmental
education and information on waste
production in the Politecnico di Milano,
Universitya’ di Napoli Federico II, and
Universita’ di Catania and has an
important partners consortium devoted
to collaborate to the achievement of GRU
project goals. ENEP is part of the
consortium and is required to provide
some examples of best practices in the
following topics:
2
The ENEP Bulletin Issue 24 – August 2012
– “Prevention” of waste according
to the European directive
2008/98/CE;
– Reduction of packaging;
– Waste sorting management;
– Green Public Procurement in
University;
– Preparation for re-use and
recycling.
The target audience is graduate and
undergraduate students from those
universities. They are, in fact, assumed to
be very sensitive to new environmental
views, issues, and practices and will be
directly involved in the activities to learn
and imbibe an environmental and
sustainability culture. By this perspective,
the dissemination of best practices
adopted within the European Community
and related to waste management is
strongly welcome. For this reason, the
GRU project team kindly asked ENEP
members for their contribution to enrich
EU “best practices” on the topic.
To communicate best practices for Project
GRU, please contact the coordinator of
the project Ms. Floriana Ferrara at the

ABOUT ENEP
ENEP is the European Network of
Environmental Professionals, which seeks to
promote and coordinate the professional
status, level and content of environmental
work and of those working in this field.
Its objectives are:
· to be the representative organisation for
all Environmental Professionals across Europe;
3
The ENEP Bulletin Issue 24 – August 2012
· to promote and co-ordinate environmental work and environmental professionals while
recognizing the separate identities of its member organisations;
· to promote adherence to environmental professional standards as one of the essential
prerequisites for achieving sustainability;
· to influence and implement the environmental policy, science and education agenda
throughout Europe.
It will do so by being respected for its adherence to sound science rather than political
lobbying but will be proactive where supported by scientific or technical evidence. Where
possible it will also use its influence within the global context, beyond the European
boundaries.
